EFDA

EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) is a European cooperation agreement between Euratom and the national Euratom fusion associations.
EFDA was set up in 1999 to coordinate the collective fusion research activities in the European countries.

Its most important tasks include:

  • the fusion activities by the Associations and European Industry
  • the collective exploitation of the JET infrastructure in Culham (UK)
  • the European contribution to international cooperation efforts such as ITER

For its activities, EFDA has three Close Support Units at its disposal:

  • EFDA-CSU Garching, hosted by the Max-Planck Institut für Plasmaphysik in Munich (D)
  • EFDA-CSU Culham, hosted by the UKAEA labs in Culham (UK), where the JET (Joint European Torus) is operated
  • EFDA-CSU Barcelona, hosted by the CIEMAT labs in Barcelona (S)

The present EFDA agreement extends through the end of 2007. A revision is being prepared to take into account the creation of Fusion For Energy.
More information on EFDA can be found at the EFDA site.
